I had heard of bulrush, but didn't realize until a few years ago that this is the British term for the plants I know as cattails. They are frequently found near water and my earliest memories are of the ones that grew around our farm's pond.

Our pond was not natural, but had been dug. This was done to provide a water source in the event of a fire, since no hydrants existed in the rural areas. Over the years, cattails grew up around one half of the pond, but not the other. I've always wondered why.

My mother loved cattails and used them in fall bouquets. They would last for a couple months, if they didn't get too warm.
